Workshop on Open Access Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities 6-7 February 2013 ERC Executive Agency, Brussels

“Greek into Arabic” invited to give voice to the ERC grantees in SSH at the Workshop on Open Access Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities, 6-7 February 2013 ERC Executive Agency, Brussels.

Workshop on Open Access Infrastructures in the Social Sciences and Humanities, 6-7 February 2013 ERC Executive Agency, Brussels.

From the outset “Greek into Arabic” is engaged in an open access policy according to what is labelled “the Green Route”, meaning that the peer-reviewed papers published in “Studia graeco-arabica” have been made immediately available on line with no fees, and that their publication involves no APCs.

“Greek into Arabic” contributes also to the open access policy regarding the publications in our field produced in the past: the series “Bibliotheca Arabica Scholasticorum”, admittedly of difficult access, has been digitised thanks to a license agreement with the publisher, in order to give worldwide access to it, freely and effectively.

Not only from the viewpoint of the primary data, but also in research infrastructures “Greek into Arabic” provides free online access: the constant updated Bibliography on our web site counts as our contribution to the so-called “digital and online revolution”, even from the viewpoint of our specific, admittedly niche field.

However, open access in Humanities raises specific problems. Being keenly aware of them, we gratefully accepted the invitation to take part in the meeting. As a matter of fact, long-term preservation of the outputs of research is a problem, in itself and in terms of sustainability after the duration time of the project. For this reason, “Studia graeco-arabica” has been made available also in print, and after the end of the ERC AdG 249431 it will probably be obliged to transform into a subscription-based journal. We gratefully acknowledge for the possibility offered to us to discuss these issues during the workshop.
