Elvira Wakelnig completed her Ph.D. in Islamic Studies at the University of Erlangen in 2005. She was research associate of the Glossarium Graeco-Arabicum-Project (GALex) at the University of Bochum (2005), short-term Frances A. Yates fellow at the Warburg Institute (2006) and held a post-doctoral position at the University of Halle (2006-7). Within a research project at the University of Warwick (2007-2010) she edited, translated and studied the Philosophy Reader preserved in the Oxford manuscript Marsh 539 (published at CUP). She was part of the HERA project Sharing Ancient WisdomS (SAWS) and responsible for the Austrian research group at the University of Vienna (2010-13).
